My family vacationed in Roatan, Honduras in December 2015. Before departing on our trip we agreed that we wanted to work with a local non-profit while we were on the island. Roatan has one of the highest populations of families with HIV/AIDS. We worked with Familias Saludables – “Healthy Families” in November to gather a list of supplies they needed for their patients. Familias Saludables is a non-profit, non-denominational organization devoted to fighting the AIDS epidemic on Roatan. Their major focus is on reducing the incidence of mother-to-child transmission of the virus both at birth and via breast milk. They run clinics for pregnant women, assign trained home visitors for mothers living with HIV/AIDS, provide palliative services and when available, they provide infant formula, medications and a host of supplies to families struggling to cope with this disease.
We were able to raise $2,100 through online fundraising that helped us sponsor two kids to attend school in 2016 as well as bring down the following supplies to Roatan with us:
- Children’s Story & Coloring Books (40)
• K-12 Workbooks (7)
• Flashcards (11)
• First 100 Words Book (2)
• Dry Erase Markers (80)
• Dry Erase Board Cleaner (5)
• Sidewalk Chalk (36)
• Crayons (120)
• Neosporin (12)
• Children’s Liquid Tylenol (16)
• Children’s Vitamins (720)
• Adult Tylenol/Ibuprofen (3,000)
• Band-Aids (180)
• Antacids (180)
